When the original Tetris released on the NES back in 1989, it was a game that not only changed the gaming landscape entirely but introduced many to an extremely addicting sensation of gameplay that carried on for many a years to come. Even to this day, the original NES Tetris is still used as a mainstay for competition by the CWTC or the Classic World Tetris Championship which is still going strong each year. While many of other iterations of Tetris have populated the gaming landscape with Puyo Puyo Tetris being the most recent iteration, which was a hybrid of Japan’s well-known Puyo Puyo and classic Tetris, Studio Enhance is looking to bring back the original sensation with their take on Tetris entitled Tetris Effect.
Named for a condition in which people begin to see things in everyday life or even their dreams as falling tetrimino blocks, Tetris Effect is a game in which visual and audio soundscapes enthrall the senses around the simple yet addicting puzzling Tetris is synonymous for. Tetris Effect is coming from studio Enhance and Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the team behind the equally beautiful Lumines but more importantly 2016’s PS4 remaster of Rez entitled Rez Infinite. Like Rez Infinite, Tetris Effect is a game that focuses immensely on surrounding the player in an almost dreamscape setting. Players play the classic Tetris game while the board and everything else is encapsulated and formed around the varying and color-heavy sights and sounds around you, mending together to form an almost zen-like experience. New gameplay elements such as the “Zone”, which slows time to allow the player to form multiple tetris’ at once, are implemented to not only multiply scores but to assist in where one misplaced piece would almost ruin an entire board. Additional modes such as Marathon and Sprint modes are also set to be included with the game as well.
Studio Enhance has also confirmed that Tetris Effect can run in 4K up to 60 fps on a PS4 Pro. Not only that, but the game will also launch to be fully playable with Playstation VR. Considering how this game is set to be an absolute spectacle for the eyes and ears, Tetris Effect is certainly a game that would make for an excellent bonus treat for those out there with a PS VR.
With an additional physical version announced as well, Tetris Effect is set to release on November 9th, 2018 for PS4.
